ABOUT LIUBAI

关于留白

ENGLISH · 英文

Liubai — 留白, "leaving white" — names both this site and a classical Chinese aesthetic of the productive void: the unpainted space that gives the painted forms their breath, the deliberate blank through which a composition becomes possible.

The name is deliberately paradoxical. Yang Lian's poems are rarely spare; they are densely populated, crowded with image, history and voice. Yet again and again their constructions gather around absences, intervals, fractures, silences and centres that resist possession. Liubai does not claim that 留白 is Yang Lian's own master category. It uses the term as a wager: a way of asking how extraordinarily abundant poems can nevertheless be organised by what remains open, withheld, unresolved or unreachable.

The site is paradoxical in the same way. Visitors will find not spareness but abundance: close readings, formal and linguistic analysis, philosophical inquiry and speculative excavation. The abundance has one purpose — to make more of the work available without pretending to exhaust it.

Architecture and translation

Yang Lian thinks of poetry as architecture: structures in which distant elements are brought into relation and disclose forms invisible in the isolated line. He also knows that crossing languages changes what such structures reveal. In the preface to Concentric Circles, he describes how Pound's Cantos, in Chinese translation, shed their diachronic struggle and stood as one timeless whole: "In the timeless air, the poems themselves are the air." The English translation of his own book did the reverse. It pulled the work back into time and conflict, and so made its challenge "more risky, more varied, and more beautiful." Commentary is a third kind of crossing. Liubai's readings aim to do what that English translation did: force latent relationships into view, so that the architecture becomes visible against the dark, like the concentric circles of light Yang once photographed in a darkened room.

How the readings are made

Much of the critical prose on Liubai is generated through sustained collaboration with AI under the direction, judgement and revision of Jan-Peter Schuring. The readings are developed through repeated comparison, questioning, source-checking and editorial revision, and they remain, by design, non-definitive.

The form of the reading follows the form of the work. Where the Sea Stands Still is read through an extended, continuous essay that follows the collection across its larger movements. Concentric Circles is read in two stages: Chinese-forward, chapter-by-chapter readings establish the textual ground, then larger essays change scale to examine distinct structural, philosophical and experiential terrains. A Tower Built Downwards, now in preparation, may require another form again.

The archive is comprehensive only within the reading programme chosen for each work. It does not claim to exhaust Yang Lian's biography, historical circumstances, reception, influences, scholarship, or the possible meanings of the poems. Interpretations are arguments rather than verdicts. Philosophical comparisons are not automatically claims of influence, and speculative connections are identified as such. Where Chinese and English textual witnesses differ and the evidence does not decide between them, the difference is preserved. The essays link wherever possible to Yang's own critical prose, translators' reflections and independent scholarship. Liubai should remain a route into the work, not a boundary around it.

How to use this site

Meet the poetry first in a state of deliberate naivety — the leaving-white of first encounter. Read slowly. Wrestle with the difficulty. Let the architectures, collisions, excesses of imagery and silences work before the commentary intervenes.

Only afterwards reach for the excavation offered here.

Then return to the poem.

The essays will not settle its meaning. The hope is that they sharpen attention: making a structure visible, a grammatical pressure audible, an image stranger, a translation choice consequential, or a question harder to dismiss. The movement of Liubai is circular: from the poem outward into analysis, and from analysis back into the poem. Everything on this site exists to serve that return.
