READING LIUBAI

There is no single beginning here. You might arrive through one poem, a remembered image, a question about exile, or the architecture of a whole book. These four paths offer places to start—not a course to complete.

Before You Begin ·

Liubai is an independent archive personally supported by Yang Lian, who has provided access to selected digital source materials but does not participate in its critical interpretations. The essays are AI-generated under the editorial direction of Jan-Peter Schuring. They are exploratory readings, not peer-reviewed or fully documented academic scholarship, and should not be relied upon as scholarly authorities without independent verification.

We invite you to approach them as arguments to question, test and reconsider—always returning to the poems themselves.

1 · Begin with a poem /

Open Where the Sea Stands Still and choose a title that draws you. Read the poetry before its commentary wherever the original reader is available. Stay with a phrase or image that resists explanation; then turn to the essay and return to the poem. The reading need not resolve what first held your attention.

2 · Follow a life through history /

Narrative Poem offers a route through family images, music, lost places and the voices of the dead. Enter through the photograph albums of Part I, or follow the elegies of Part II. Read a sequence slowly: the connections between its fragments may matter as much as any single scene.

NARRATIVE POEM →

3 · Explore a poetic architecture /

Yi and Concentric Circles invite attention to the shape of a whole work: divisions, recurrence, symmetry and change. Begin with a passage, then widen your view. The sustained studies of Yi and the readings of each Circle offer different scales of attention. Structure is something to experience in the movement of language, not only a diagram to understand.

4 · Wander through worlds of image and question /

A mask, a room, water, a shore: one image can lead across books. Riding Pisces gathers work from several collections and offers another way of crossing the archive. The Essays & Articles page brings longer inquiries into conversation. Follow what catches your attention; you do not need to read the collections in order.

Enter Constellations, a series of experimental reading projects where works, images and ideas become neighbouring worlds. Four encounters invite you to wander between poetic architecture, visual memory, philosophy and the patterns of change. Follow an image, linger with a question, or let chance open a door; the connections you discover may lead elsewhere.

The Cut and the Whole ·

Eleven journeys bring relational ontology into encounter with Karen Barad, Zhuangzi and other voices, asking how relations, boundaries and acts of looking shape a world. This neighbouring field of thought can sharpen our attention to the relational spaces Yang Lian’s poetry creates.

The One and the Nothing · 一与无

Sixty-four rooms bring Yang Lian’s Yi into encounter with the Book of Changes and Leibniz’s binary imagination. Follow air, earth, water and fire, choose a hexagram, or let a casting of coins open a path. Each room invites a crossing between poetic language and the patterns through which we seek to read a world.

Different forms of reading /

Close readings stay near a poem or sequence. Three Lenses essays step back to explore distinct critical perspectives. Graphic editions offer a visual route through an argument; they are another encounter, not a replacement for the fuller reading. Where available, AI-generated audio discussions provide a further way of listening and returning.

Liubai’s criticism is developed in dialogue with AI and remains an interpretation, open to correction and disagreement. Chinese originals and English translations are distinct literary encounters. Move between them where you can; neither commentary nor translation exhausts the poem.

Keep the books beside you / 让书与阅读相伴

The published books preserve the work’s sequence, page and rhythm. Liubai is a companion to them. Purchase links on the Collections page lead to publishers where available, supporting the poet, translators and the work of literary publishing.

There is no obligation to finish an archive. Its purpose is to make possible an encounter worth returning to.

The wider poetic universe /

To feel the full force of a single line in Yang Lian, sometimes we need to step back far enough to see the world it belongs to. Across Yi, Concentric Circles and Narrative Poem, an image can change its meaning as it returns; a small verbal turn can carry the pressure of an entire architecture. Give yourself this wider view. It can make the delicacy and precision of the close-up newly visible—and reveal why so much is at stake in a seemingly slight change.

Field, Lure and Duration offers one adventurous route through this larger field. It asks how form can disclose a world, become a constraint, and open again as an invitation completed in time by a reader. Follow its argument across the trilogy, then test it against a passage that holds you. The wider view is most rewarding when it brings you closer to the poem.

A first inquiry into spatial poetics /

What happens when a poem becomes a place we can return to? In Yang Lian’s writing, a character, a silence or a repeated line can bring distant lives and moments into relation. A whole book can grow from those encounters. Stasis in the Character follows this movement from the sixty-four rooms of Yi to the structures of Concentric Circles, asking how poetry makes time, history and translation newly perceptible.

For readers drawn to this spatial imagination, the essay offers a sustained first inquiry. Begin with its opening, follow the examples that catch your attention, and return to the poems. Watch how a later line changes an earlier one—and how a familiar passage changes when you come back.

Form and life / 形式与生命

Continue with The Form That Gives and Takes, which brings spatial poetics back to the lives within it. How can a structure make experience visible and still leave room for what it cannot contain? Reading across the trilogy, this essay asks how poetic form can remain answerable to a singular life. It is a companion to the inquiry above, inviting you to look at the architecture from the position of someone who must live inside it.

When the world looks back / 当世界回望

What changes when the things we look at seem to look back? Looked At by the Things follows this reversal through Yang Lian’s YI and Concentric Circles, bringing the poems into conversation with Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy of perception. Eyes, hands, mirrors and wounds reveal an intimacy that never becomes complete fusion. Read it as an invitation to notice the distance within connection: the gap that lets another life remain other, and the histories that make that gap painful.
